Adobe Firefly Boards: AI Ideation for Brand Teams
On this page

Every campaign starts with weeks of ideation that rarely live in one place: references saved in personal folders, a PDF deck passed around by email, screenshots in a chat thread with the agency, a presentation rebuilt before every review and, more and more, AI images generated in tools nobody on the brand team administers. By the time a concept is approved, it's hard to say which version won and which model produced the image that sold it to the creative director.

Adobe Firefly Boards targets exactly that stage: ideation and concept development, before production. It's a shared canvas where a team gathers references, generates and remixes images and video with Adobe and partner models, and presents the concept in the same place it was built.

At WolfSellers we're an Adobe Solution Partner at the Gold level, and we work across Adobe's content supply chain end to end. This article is about Boards specifically. What the Firefly models are, how Custom Models and the API work, and how Firefly connects to Adobe GenStudio for Performance Marketing and Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Assets is covered in our Adobe Firefly for enterprise guide.

What is Adobe Firefly Boards

Adobe Firefly Boards is an infinite-canvas visual workspace, inside the Adobe Firefly web app, where a team builds moodboards, storyboards and vision boards: it gathers references, generates and remixes images and video with AI, and edits the same board in real time with other people.

Adobe introduced it in public beta on April 24, 2025 as a surface for moodboarding and concept exploration, added video in June 2025 and announced worldwide availability on September 24, 2025. Since then it has added exploration features, 2D-to-3D conversion, PDF export and one-click handoff of assets to Adobe Premiere.

What it isn't: it doesn't replace Photoshop, Premiere or After Effects for producing the final asset, or a digital asset management (DAM) system for managing and approving it. It belongs to the earlier stage, the one that decides what gets produced.

The problem it solves: scattered ideation

Today, without a shared space With a shared board
References in personal folders and on everyone's phone One canvas per campaign with references, explorations and concepts
A PDF or slide deck rebuilt for every round Presentation mode on the same board the team is working in
Feedback spread across email, chat and calls The internal team and the agency edit at the same time
AI images generated in tools Legal has never heard of Generation inside an Adobe environment, with the model identified
Exploration gets lost on the way to production Assets move on to Photoshop, Premiere or After Effects

Key Firefly Boards features

What Adobe publishes about the product, translated into what it means for a brand team:

Feature What it does Why it matters to a brand team
Infinite canvas One unlimited space for images and video Keep a campaign's whole exploration in one place, organized by stage
Real-time collaboration Several people work on the same board at once Ideation sessions with agency, product and brand without sending files
Presentation mode Presents the board to clients Take concepts to a review without building a separate deck
Generate and remix images and video Generates from text or references and remixes what's already on the canvas Explore more directions before committing production budget
Model picker Adobe Firefly and partner models on the same board Pick the model for the job, within company rules
Presets and Describe Image One-click styles; Describe Image analyzes an image and writes an editable prompt Lower the learning curve for people who don't write prompts
Generative Text Edit (beta when announced in September 2025) Changes the text inside an image Test headlines or claims on the same composition
2D to 3D Turns an image into a 3D model to rotate objects and people Check product or character angles before a photo shoot
PDF export and bulk download Exports the board as a PDF and downloads images in bulk Document the approved concept and hand it to production
Creative Cloud handoff Takes work into Photoshop, Premiere or After Effects; since January 2026, sends assets to a Premiere project in one click Move into production without downloading and re-uploading
Quick Guides Guided workflows, such as applying a logo to product images or building a brand moodboard Standardize how the team works
Custom Models Adobe announced in October 2025 they'd be usable in the Firefly app or in Boards Explore with a model trained on the brand's own assets

On models: as of October 12, 2026, the Boards page lists Adobe Firefly and partner models such as GPT Image, Google Gemini (Nano Banana), FLUX, Kling AI, Runway, Luma AI Ray 3 and Topaz. That list changes often, and your company's approved-model list needs to be reviewed at the same pace.

Firefly Boards use cases for enterprise brand teams

Seasonal campaign concepts: Black Friday, El Buen Fin and the holidays

Peak-season campaigns get planned almost at the same time and compete for the same weeks of the team's calendar. In Mexico that means El Buen Fin, the country's biggest retail event, right before the holidays. One board per campaign, with fixed sections (brief, assets from past seasons, exploration by direction, finalists), lets the review committee follow progress in presentation mode and keeps the decision on record in the same place. For getting the store itself ready for those dates, see our El Buen Fin 2026 guide for Adobe Commerce.

Video storyboards

Now that Boards supports video, a team can upload reference clips, generate frames and short shots with video models, arrange them as a sequence and share them with the production company. The storyboard aligns framing, pacing and tone before the shoot; whatever survives moves on to Premiere.

Art direction for a product launch

Before hiring production for a launch, it pays to explore three or four directions (lighting, palette, setting, casting). 2D-to-3D conversion helps review product angles, and if the brand already has a Custom Model, exploration starts closer to its style.

Stakeholder presentations

Presentation mode removes the parallel deck that's always out of date. Once the decision is made, the board's exported PDF, with the date and the approver's name, becomes the reference document for production.

Remote sprints with agencies

When the agency sits in another city or country, a shared board replaces rounds of files over email. Decide which accounts external collaborators use and when their access ends after the campaign.

Legal counsel and brand manager review legal terms beside a concept image before approving it.

Governance and risk: Firefly models vs. partner models

The model picker is Boards' biggest advantage for exploration and its main governance risk: the image that wins over the committee may come from a model with different terms than Firefly. Adobe has framed it this way since March 2025: Firefly models for production, partner models for exploring other aesthetics during ideation.

Here's what Adobe publishes, as checked on October 12, 2026:

Topic Adobe Firefly models Partner models
Training Licensed content, such as Adobe Stock, and public domain content Up to each partner; Adobe's pages don't detail it
Commercial use Adobe says it built them to be commercially safe Adobe says it's the creator's responsibility to decide whether a partner model is appropriate for their project
IP indemnification Only for Creative Cloud for teams or enterprise customers on a plan that includes it (the terms name Creative Cloud Pro Plus and Creative Cloud Edition 4), for eligible features and surfaces, with conditions The terms treat them as third-party services, provided "solely as a convenience". Check with Adobe whether your contract adds any coverage for partner models
How you tell them apart You pick them in the model menu, and Content Credentials show whether content came from Firefly or a partner Same
Your content Adobe says it doesn't train on your content Adobe says neither it nor its partners train on your personal or project data, and that it requires this in its partner agreements
Enterprise control Not applicable Adobe announced that enterprises can enable partner models at the organization level

Two details from Adobe's Generative AI Product Specific Terms, effective April 23, 2026, worth reading with your legal team:

  1. Firefly indemnification doesn't cover everything you generate. It applies to output from eligible features on eligible surfaces, as listed in the Firefly product description, after an "export event." Among other cases, it excludes claims arising from modifying the output, combining it with other materials, or the context in which it's used.
  2. Adobe may modify or discontinue support for a partner model at any time. A production workflow shouldn't depend on a specific partner model.

If you can't confirm that a feature, a model and the surface you use it on are covered by your contract, treat it as exploration, not production.

Content Credentials

Content Credentials are metadata Adobe automatically attaches to AI-generated content to show whether it was created with a Firefly model or a partner model. For governance, they're your audit trail: keep that information when an asset moves into production, and record the model used in your DAM metadata.

Usage rules we recommend

  1. Two lanes. Exploration, with whatever models the company enables, and production, with only the models and features Legal approves.
  2. An approved-model list per lane, checked against your Adobe contract: which models, which features and which product your coverage applies to. Features labeled beta go in the exploration lane.
  3. Translate into production. If the committee picks an image made with a partner model, it's recreated with an approved model, photographed or designed.
  4. What can be uploaded. Owned or licensed assets only. Other brands' campaigns and images from the web can inspire, but never feed generation for production assets.
  5. Real people and brands. Don't generate real people's faces or third-party logos.
  6. Administration. Decide with IT whether partner models are enabled, who creates boards and how external users get in.
  7. Brand and legal review before publishing any asset, whatever model it came from.

This isn't legal advice: your AI usage policy and your reading of the contract should be validated by your legal team.

Where Firefly Boards fits in the content supply chain

The content supply chain runs from brief to measurement. Boards covers one specific stage:

Stage Adobe tool Output
Planning and brief Adobe Workfront Brief, schedule and owners
Ideation and concept Firefly Boards Approved concept and references
Production Firefly, Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects Master assets
Management and approval Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Assets Approved asset with metadata, rights and versions
Variations and activation Adobe GenStudio for Performance Marketing Channel variations, activation and performance

What makes it work is the handoff between stages:

  • Boards to production: define what counts as an approved concept. We recommend the board's exported PDF, with the date and approvers.
  • Production to AEM Assets: the DAM gets the master assets and approved key visuals, not hundreds of explorations. Each asset carries campaign, rights and model used. We cover this in our digital asset management guide.
  • AEM Assets to GenStudio: channel variations come from approved assets, not from the board. More in our Adobe GenStudio article.
  • Briefs and approvals: if you already use Adobe Workfront, link the board from the project task. How we set up those workflows is in Adobe Workfront for marketing operations.

Availability, plans and generative credits

As checked on Adobe's pages on October 12, 2026:

  • Status: Adobe announced worldwide availability on September 24, 2025, after a public beta that started that April. Some features inside Boards are announced as beta.
  • Trial: the product page says Firefly Boards is free to try.
  • Firefly plans: paid plans, both individual and for teams, include unlimited access to Boards and to standard generative features.
  • Generative credits: per the plans page, they're used for premium features such as video, audio and partner model outputs. They reset each billing cycle and don't roll over.
  • Enterprises: the same page says enterprise customers can access Custom Models and IP indemnification. What your Creative Cloud for enterprise contract includes, and whether your admin has enabled partner models, is something your Adobe representative confirms.

We don't sell Adobe licenses: your plan is purchased from Adobe or an authorized reseller. What we do is review with you what your contract includes before defining usage rules.

When Firefly Boards makes sense and when it doesn't

It makes sense when… It can wait when…
Several campaigns a year go through a review committee before production There are few campaigns and concept development isn't the bottleneck
You work with agencies or teams in several cities or countries There's no AI usage policy and no one to own it: policy first
You already use Creative Cloud or Firefly and want AI to live inside Adobe The bottleneck is producing variations or approving assets
The video team builds storyboards regularly You expect it to replace the DAM or the project management tool
Legal needs to know which model produced each image No one will maintain the board templates and rules

How to start: a 30- to 60-day pilot

  1. Pick one team and one real campaign, with a launch date and a business owner who makes the call.
  2. Write the rules before opening the first board: models per lane, what can be uploaded, who approves and how external users get in.
  3. Measure a baseline from the last comparable campaign: how long it took from brief to approved concept and how many review rounds it needed.
  4. Build a board template with fixed sections: brief, references, exploration, finalists and decision.
  5. Review weekly what worked, which model was used for what and where the board got stuck.
  6. Close with a decision: scale, adjust the rules or drop it.
Metric How to measure it
Concept-to-approval time Days from brief to approved concept, against the baseline
Review rounds Feedback cycles until approval
Directions explored Concepts explored vs. concepts presented
Rule compliance Production assets made only with approved models
Generative credits Consumption per campaign and per feature type
Adoption People working in the board vs. people still emailing files

How we do it at WolfSellers

Firefly Boards is an Adobe cloud service: there's nothing to install or integrate. What it needs is decisions about how it's used, and that's where we work, on three fronts:

  1. Governance. We review what your Adobe contract includes, define the AI usage policy (models per lane, what gets uploaded, brand and legal review) and the admin setup that backs it.
  2. Workflow. We design the handoffs between Boards, production, AEM Assets and GenStudio for Performance Marketing, with metadata and approvals.
  3. Adoption. Board templates, training for your team and your agency, and a pilot with metrics so you decide with data.

This is part of our AI and automation practice. If you'd like to review your case, get in touch.

Frequently asked questions about Adobe Firefly Boards

What is Adobe Firefly Boards?

It's an infinite, collaborative canvas inside the Adobe Firefly web app for building moodboards, storyboards and vision boards: gathering references, generating and remixing images and video with Adobe and partner models, editing in real time with other people and presenting the board.

Is Firefly Boards free?

Adobe says it's free to try. For ongoing use, paid Firefly plans, both individual and for teams, include unlimited access to Boards, while premium features such as video and partner models consume generative credits. For a company, your Adobe representative confirms what your contract includes.

Are Firefly Boards' third-party models safe for commercial use?

Adobe describes its Firefly models as designed to be commercially safe. For partner models, it says it's the creator's responsibility to decide whether they're appropriate for their project, and its terms treat them as third-party services. Define which models are allowed for production work and check it against your contract.

Does Adobe train its models on what I upload to Firefly Boards?

Adobe says it doesn't train on your content, and that its partners don't train on your personal or project data either, because its agreements require it. Even so, upload only owned or licensed assets.

How is it different from a traditional moodboard?

A traditional moodboard collects images that already exist. In Boards you also generate and remix images and video on the same canvas, several people edit at once, you present without building another document, and assets go straight to Photoshop, Premiere or After Effects.

Is Firefly Boards available for enterprises?

Yes. Adobe includes it in its Firefly plans for teams, and enterprise customers can also access Custom Models and IP indemnification. Adobe announced that enterprises can decide whether to enable partner models across the organization.

Does Firefly Boards replace AEM Assets or GenStudio for Performance Marketing?

No. Boards covers ideation. AEM Assets manages and approves final assets, and GenStudio for Performance Marketing produces variations and activates them in channels. They're stages of the same content supply chain.
